The Craniosacral System & How it Impacts Your Health

Some of you have heard about Craniosacral Therapy and some of you may have not. Whenever I work on your body, but especially when I am on your sacrum, head, neck & face, I'm incorporating this form of treatment. I’ve recently completed additional training to work with the Craniosacral system in the body. This form of treatment was developed by an Osteopath and is covered briefly in Osteopathic school, however, a deeper understanding of the work requires continuing education, so that's what I did at the Upledger Institute this past May.

What is it?

Each person has a craniosacral rhythm which is caused by the increase and decrease of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The CSF is produced and reabsorbed at a regular rate within and around the brain and spinal cord. When my hands are on your body, I am palpating this rhythm & bringing balance to it when it is lacking in symmetry, amplitude, quality or rate.

Why it’s important?

The CSF bathes the spinal cord and brain with nourishment. Working with it can be extremely relaxing and supportive to the nervous system, sometimes releasing stress on a subtle but powerful level. It can be especially helpful for headaches & migraines, chronic back and neck pain,  chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, TMJ issues, PTSD, scoliosis and many other conditions. Additionally, when I work on the tissues of the neck & face, there is an added bonus of relaxing these tissues which can result in a more youthful glow in the face!

The TMJ & Mouth
Our jaw is an area of the body that can hold high levels of tension. Since it is controlled by a nerve in our brain that is stimulated in moments of stress, clenching and grinding of our jaw can be a subconscious reaction to stress in our lives. If you are interested in having intra-oral work done to address TMJ tension, I am now trained to do so. All work involves me wearing a latex glove and is all done while you are relaxed on the table. This work can also be achieved outside of the mouth, which can be more comfortable.
